Why 93% of Dental Practices Are Invisible to AI Search (And How to Fix It)

Your Domain Authority does not transfer. Your Google star rating does not automatically appear in a ChatGPT response. Your top Google ranking for “dentist in [city]” does not mean ChatGPT knows your practice exists.

This is not a failure of your marketing. It is a structural mismatch between two platforms that operate on different rules.


Why Google Rankings Don’t Drive Dental Practice AI Search Visibility

The core problem is citation architecture. AI engines build responses by citing sources they have deemed credible for healthcare information. Those sources tend to be structured: the NPI database, the ADA provider directory, Healthgrades, major dental platforms, and websites with Schema.org markup that clearly identifies them as a medical or dental practice.

A practice website built around keyword optimization — with service pages, blog content, and location pages targeting Google search terms — may be completely absent from the citation stack that AI engines consult. The practice has earned Google’s trust through years of SEO work. It has not earned a place in the sources AI engines draw on when answering patient questions.

This gap is widening. As more patients shift their first search to AI engines, visibility on Google alone is no longer enough. The question is no longer only “do I rank on page one?” It is also “does ChatGPT mention me when a new patient asks who to call?”


The Three Ways AI Gets Your Practice Wrong

When AI does engage with a practice’s information, the problems typically fall into three categories.

Omission.The most common failure mode. AI engines, when asked about dentists in a given area, simply do not mention the practice. The patient receives a handful of recommendations and yours is not one of them. This is a silent loss — you never know the patient searched, and they never know your practice exists.

Factual errors. AI engines learn from data, and that data goes stale. Practices that moved locations, changed phone numbers, or adjusted hours often find that AI engines are presenting outdated information with full confidence. A patient who calls the wrong number, shows up at the old address, or arrives outside actual business hours does not rebook.

Misrepresentation.In some cases, AI engines attribute a practice to the wrong specialty, associate it with a different city, or recommend a direct competitor when a patient specifically asks about a service your practice offers. This is the least common failure mode — and the one that causes the most direct patient loss when it occurs.

In each case, the underlying cause is the same: AI engines are drawing on data the practice owner has never reviewed and has no standard mechanism to correct.


The Competitive Opportunity Nobody Has Claimed Yet

The 93% number cuts both ways.

Improving AI visibility is not a single-variable problem, but the factors are identifiable.

Structured data. Schema.org LocalBusiness and MedicalBusiness markup on the practice website gives AI engines clear, machine-readable signals about what the practice does, where it is located, and what patients it serves. Many dental websites lack this entirely.

NAP consistency.Name, Address, Phone — these three fields need to match exactly across every directory listing, dental platform, and review site where the practice appears. Discrepancies signal unreliability and reduce the likelihood of an AI citation.

Authority citations. NPI registry listings, dental association directories, and healthcare platforms carry weight with AI engines. Consistent, accurate representation across credible sources increases the probability of appearing in a recommendation.

Content that answers patient questions. FAQs, service pages, and blog posts that directly address what patients ask AI engines are one of the most underused visibility levers. If a patient asks ChatGPT “does [practice name] accept Aetna?” and no page on the practice website answers that question, AI engines have nothing to cite.

None of these factors require a complete website rebuild. They are, in most cases, corrections to existing content and structure — but they require knowing specifically what each AI engine is currently saying about the practice and where the gaps are.
